Decatur’s Smokin’ BBQ Festival, founded by LaVell Peete in August of 2015, is a Kansas City BBQ sanctioned event scheduled for October 6-7, 2017 in Decatur, IL. The non-for-profit organization has a mission “to bring people together to enjoy a culinary experience and fundraiser for the Selma (Knox) Peete Scholarship for students to attend the Richland Community College Culinary Program”. After expenses are paid, all remaining funds will go towards the Scholarship.
About the Selma (Knox) Peete Scholarship
The scholarship was created in memory of LaVell’s mother, Selma (Knox) Peete, who passed away in June of 2016. LaVell remembers her as the “greatest cook ever” and credits her for his love and passion for cooking. LaVell hopes the scholarship will give other culinary enthusiasts the chance to further their education in the industry and make their dreams of a Culinary Career a reality.
